Media Centre Hibernates after showing logo

A friend's Media Centre is plugged into the mains and will play DVDs - but when asked to load Windows it starts showing the logo screen and then goes straight into hibernation mode.

I can't seem to get it to go into Safe Mode.

It's a HP Pavillion DV9000.

It was working fine before I had to change the mains adapter because it was faulty.

Please advise what troubleshooting I should do ? At the moment the user doesn't have the original CD so I can't try that, and I only have CDs available for Home and Pro versions, not Media Centre. I'd like to get a CD (no need for a licence key as it's on the laptop), but I'm not sure how to.

Your best bet to get a re-install or factory recovery cd is to contact HP.
