About those restore points - did I see one a few months older that this XP could be converted to?

About a Repair Install - hmmmm, there's been two major moving of items since we got that XP, then we got divorced and the XP moved out. I hope that software CD can be found somewhere!!!

Of major concern - In case the Repair Install would lose all info, can the info on the XP's HD be copied to an external HD? At that thought - would I be copying the virus/malware that may have caused all this problem? If I can transfer info to external HD, what software should I not copy so it will not cause a problem with the Repair Install-ed software when moved back into XP? If I understand right a lot of programs share parts with other folders.

If it's of any use with all this, I have a Vista computer at home.

You've been tremendous help and I appreciate your time and thoughts.

If it was due to malware, backing up your documents, music and pictures should not represent a threat. Applications or programs should not be backed up.

If the registry in the Repair folder did not helped, nothing will. I believe it is something else missing or corrupted in the system.

You can do all the backup throughout the Reatogo environment.

But shop around. Perhaps a friend with the same OS may help.

I will do the restore then later go thru Reatogo to copy info to external HD and I'll look for the software CD.

Much thanks for all the tremendous help,

ummmm - what if I connect my external HD and the XP computer does not recognize it from Reatogo?
bamakodaker

Never mind - I left external HD plugged in and restarted computer and it works fine.

Would you believe - - the batch file doesn't disappear, the DOS window stays up, ending with
J:\>Del "B:\7z01F.tmp\Restore.bat"
Insert the diskette that contains the batch file and press any key when ready.

so now what do I do?

Ahhhh the fun continues! lol

Just delete the batch file. Don't run it twice.

I'm a little confused, the instructions were - "double click on the Restore.bat. If all goes well the batch file will disappear after the MSDOS window closes." I selected the Restore.bat but the MSDOS window stayed many minutes still with request to insert diskette.
I hope I didn't cause problems because I did repeat that step. I had thought maybe I'd selected the wrong folder for the bat file.
I'll delete my previous Restore and download another copy to my flash drive. I do observe the date the file was added to drive.
Should I go thru this Restore step again?

Also - the XP is an HP computer. I haven't found any Windows disk but I did find an HP Repair (or something like that) disk that I made when we got the computer. Right now I'm hoping that has the OS on it.

I appreciate your suggestions.

Never mind that. Since you will need to perform a Repair install, it should be fixed thereby.

OK - I guess I was panicking. I went ahead with the one disk I had. I thought I'd chosen the Full Recovery but if I did, it didn't work like folk said it would. I did not lose any of the old info from the computer! I restarted it a couple of times and it seems to work fine. It doesn't have the old screensaver settings and such but so far no complaints.

Many thanks!
