Some USB devices work, some won't

If I plug my memory card into a slot on my card reader, it won't detect. A USB thumb drive also won't detect. In the same ports, a mouse, keyboard, or exteral harddrive all work fine.

Any suggestions? Would an externally powered USB hub make a difference?

It's something I personally would try since it's the only way you're going to find out, plus the hub will give you more ports to use.
Just make sure that the hub you buy does actually come with a mains-adaptor. I've seen some hubs in the shops which do have a mains input
but the mains-adaptor is not actually provided!
