cannot figure out what to do have tried couple of things updating driver, installing new hardware. I have no midi playback devices listed under control panel>sounds and audio devices. Here's what I'm running with XP pro
AMD sempron 2800+
Main Circuit Board
Board: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. K8M800-8237
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. F5 01/12/2005
Multimedia
Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA ® Audio Controller
Standard Game Port
USB Internet Phone by TigerJet

yes I read that I don't see a driver icon in control panel so I don't know how to remove my drivers, but there is no driver for midi playback device dso I don't think that would help anyway?

Go into control panel/system/device manager and see if it shows an audio device.

Have you tried using Windows' "System Restore" to return Windows to a previous state when your computer was functioning correctly?

well im not sure when it happened because I don't use midi everyday, but yeah I did use system restore and that didn't work. Looking in the device manager I do have the vinyl AC97 combo driver.
