Yes, OK but that is NOT the solution, that is only a test to establish what is the cause. Start IE normally
ON the Tools tab, click on Manage Add-ons, check each heading in the left hand pane. Disable all except the one under your SEARCH
provider that you usually use. What else is listed under search providers.
Under toolbars and extensions and accelerators. - enable them one at a time until the problem occurs.
Then post back with which causes the issue.
WHEN did you last clear your browsing history.

You can do, it will not matter which you do first. Click Tools tab again, then delete browsing history. NOTE if you check all boxes this will as you can see delete any saved passwords. That is not your windows password, only ones you have saved on websites. If you are unsure of any of them , leave this unchecked.
The more important issue is the first task, to see which add on was causing the problem/.

It could have been, although I would have favoured an add-on.
When did you last clean the browsing history, before this time.
Also when did you last clean up generally.
How much free space on the hard drive. Go My computer, click the hard drive and it will tell you on the left pane, depending on which view of XP you are using, classic or otherwise. OR right click the hard drive and click properties and it will tell you there below the graphical picture of the drive.

i'm only using a 80 gig hard drive for my operating system and another larger hard drive as a "file cabinet". the 80 gig says i have more than 50% free space. as to clean up all i know is disk clean up and temporay internet files.

Well clearly there is no problem with the free space.
I think it must have been an add-on.
If you are happy we will consider it solved.
This is a very good temp and cache file cleaner.

It takes up absolutely no resources and is perfectly safe.
HOWEVER if you check all boxes it will delete the cookies and temps storing any saved website passwords.
I would consider going IE8 it has more and better inbuilt security and the pop-up blocker is better.
Pleased it was solved.

Thanks for the support.
I can quite understand when his anti-virus flagged it, he thought I had sent him a risky link.
I sent him the direct link to the attribune site.
