Terrible terrible situation here. I am unable to open any program except IE, Firefox because my system's been taken over by "Spyware Protection" which is anything but.

Followed the tutorial and have tried:

-> exehelper and rkill - rkill opened and ran, but didn't have any effect. All of the other programs say that the version is infected with the W32/Blaster.worm.

-> VIPRE Rescue Program - tried it from my computer but the winzip didn't autorun. Went to work, unzipped it, placed it on a flash: tried it from home and it won't work - it opens briefly, then closes again - the popup from the evil company says it is infected with the worm.

-> SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner - same issue at home, unable to open b/c no winzip. I couldn't open it from work because it said I needed administrative rights and I am on a network there so didn't know how/couldn't do anything.

Are there any options for me? Help, please. Please, help. Thanks!

Hi LeilaB,

Welcome to Geekstogo. My name is Salagubang and I'll be helping you with this problem.

I am still a trainee so all my posts will be checked by an Expert. It's your advantage that there are two people looking at your log but responses may be a little delayed so please be patient.

  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described. I would recommend printing them out, if you can, as you can check off each step as you complete it. If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply. You can do this in separate posts if it's easier for you
  • English is not my first language, so please do not use slang or idioms, as this makes it difficult to understand for me.
Firstly....

On the clean computer.

  • Download the attached Scan.txt and save it to your USB stick.
    Attached File  Scan.txt   396bytes   1941 downloads
  • Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
  • Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  • Double click OTLPEStd.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD

On the infected computer.

  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads Posted Image
  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start.
  • Double click Custom scans and fixes box, a dialogue box will appear. Choose the scan.txt saved previously on your USB drive.
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system.
  • Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
  • Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
  • You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
  • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply

Thank you for your response and help. I knew I didn't have access to an alternate computer, so I continued to research my problem and realized that the "worm" was probably only the malware. In safe mode I was able to run Malwarebytes, which found and quarantined one problem. When I restarted as "normal" the problems seemed to be gone - I could open programs, including Malwarebytes and others.

I still see the malware "Spyware Protection" icon on my desktop and I am worried that it will regenerate or reload (or something). How can I remove this program successfully from my computer? The program is saved in "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\defender.exe"

Thanks.

Hi LeilaB,

Lets see if you can get me some logs. In case of an error running OTL, try running it using safemode.

Posted ImageOTL
  • Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the OTL icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

    netsvcs
    drivers32
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    /md5stop
    c:\windows\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and paste them into your reply.

Hi LeilaB,

=====================================

NO FIREWALL - NO ANTIVIRUS
From your logs, I did not notice a firewall or antivirus application installed. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have these basic tools installed and kept current to thwart the spread of malware on your computer. It is necessary to have an antivirus program running on your computer to help catch and keep some of the many types of malware and virus that people keep putting on the web.

Below are some free antivirus programs that I recommend. There are also many antivirus programs that will give you a free trial or limited use to see if you like it before purchasing.

=====================================

Some reminders:

Limewire is a Peer-to-peer (P2P) programs. These applications can provide medium for entry of unverified data which tend to corrupt your system - a great way to infect your computer. Those who participate in P2P file sharing both provide files for others to download by uploading them onto their computers. They also download the files of others who have uploaded music and videos onto their own computers. Many times, however, networks will make it so your own files can be uploaded by others.

You may consider that P2P downloads are:

  • Not always legal. While Limewire, BitComet and P2P programs are themselves legal, downloading music, videos, and so forth (depending on the site) is often in violation of copyright laws, and many people have been prosecuted for downloading files illegal.
  • Malware - P2P is one of the most common way to geting infected. Malware writers use these programs to spread infections as it is the easiest way for them. The majority of infections we see in the Malware Removal forum are due to people using P2P programs to download cracks/keygens/warez. These are not only illegal, but will always contain some form of malware.

You have no way of verifying that the things you download are legitimate or that they don't contain malware. Even with an up to date anti-virus and firewall, these things will still infect you. It is highly recommend that you uninstall all peer-to-peer programs. It just isn't worth it.

=====================================
