I'm trying to install a guitar-learning program but every time I get the following error:

"Setup is unable to find a hard disk location to store temporary files .... Error 101"

I've looked up solutions on the net but I haven't been successful. I do have a C:Windows/Temp folder and I even created a Temp folder in the C drive. Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Litmatch21,

We will need some more information, like which program are you trying to install? :-)
Also have you checked if there is enough space left on your harddrive?
Is your harddrive partitioned or do you have multiple?
Do all partitions have enough free space?

Hope to help,

Mythio

This may help see what is going on.
Go to Start then to Run
Type in compmgmt.msc and click Enter
On left side click on Disk Management
On right side you will see you hard drive.
Now I need you to take a screenshot and attach it to your next reply. Do the following to take a screenshot while the above is open and showing on your desktop.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop

Attach it to your next reply

I'm trying to install Emedia Guitar Methode V3 (Vol 1). Also, I have more than enough space on my harddrive (6+Gigs). My harddrive is not (I think) partitioned and I only have one.

When I type "compmgmt.msc" I get a Windows Photo Viewer window telling me "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn't support this file format or you don;t have the latest updates to Photo Viewer." I get the same message when I try to reach Disk Management through the control panel.

No problem we can find the info another way.
Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
    Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
    2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages...

C: (NTFS) 95293 MB (6840 MB free)
Problem: Disk free space is only 7% on drive C:.

Just as I suspected.
Please do the following in the order I have posted them.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If this does not work then:

Go to:
    Start and then My Computer
Right Click On "C" drive and then click on Properties
Click on Tools tab at the top
In the Error Checking field click Check Now

When that is done

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:
It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged

Reboot and let me know how system is running now

I've performed the above but I still receive the same message. I paraphrased the error in my original post but the exact message can be seen in the attached picture. I says free up at 736KB but I currently have 8.5 gigs.

Hi Litmatch21,

Are you running the program as administrator?

Right click the setup.exe you start the installation with and choose "Run as administrator".

It's a very basic thing and would be requested by most programs automatically but it never hurts to check.

If it doesn't help, wait for rshaffer61, perhaps he has some more ideas.

Hope to help,

Mythio

That did the trick! It is weird because I've ever had this issue with other installations. Thank you Mythio and thank you Rshaffer61 for your help. Once again geekstogo comes through :D

Hi Litmatch21,

No Problem :-)

Normally you would not have to worry about this, as the program will ask for administrator permissions when they are needed.
But some programs don't have this built in.

Glad I could help,

Mythio

You are welcome and watch that free space. Anything below 10% free space and your MFT can become corrupted.
Thank you for allowing us to assist you and for your patience during all the steps.
