internet problems

my wife bought a computer tower from some one
and it will not hook up to the internet
it says connected on the computer and on the modem
on the local area connection status screen
it is sending but not receiving
can I get some help?

Try replacing the network card inside the tower case with a new one. They cost less than £10 (that's $15 on your side of the pond). Also check your using the correct type of networking cable (ethernet cable) from router/modem to network card and that the cable is sound with no breaks in it (buy a new one of those too just to be sure).
