I am getting a number of BSODS while in the middle of gaming, and sometimes when I am not. I will post the last 5 or so.

Now [bleep] you can see, the file path is the same for all of them, but the error changes with the more recent crashes. I have googled the problem and rolled back my NVIDIA drivers from the most current (260.somethin) which was suggested in the NVIDIA forums. This fixed a few conflicts between other files and this one, but nv4_disp.dll continues to cause crashes. What do I do now?

Did you recently update your video driver?
All your BSOD's point to the video driver as being the culprit.
Also would you please do the following.

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.

• It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
• Now go to Start and then to All Programs
• Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
• In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
• Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
• Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
• Attach it to your next reply

I had updated my drivers about two weeks ago or so, then when I realized that the most recent nvidia drivers are fraut with bugs, I rolled back to an earlier version about two days ago.
Here is the window you asked for btw.

This shows the +12 volt rail is borderline and most likely failing also.


At this point I would say you have a failing PSU.

odd that I would have a failing power supply when I just bought the computer Well, we all know that computer hardware is not infallible. Hopefully I can get a new psu from my old unit. Changing this out should clear up my bsod problem yes? or is that another issue entirely?

Well hopefully that is the root of your problem as a variable wattage can cause all kinds of problems the least being what you are experiencing.
Make sure whatever PSU you put in it that it is at least the same wattage of what is in there now. It would be better if it actually was a little more to make sure you have enough for future upgrades. Also make sure it has all the correct connections for your stuff. Nothing worse then having IDE power connections and no SATA ones or no GPU connections.

Most likely yes since the wattage would be variable there the PSU might report it also.
You might try moving it to another outlet and see if the issue resolves.

thank you both for your diligant work. I will try the different power outlets first, but I think I will have to save up for the psu with sata connection since the 800watt that I have in my other unit has no sata connections (I think). I am not sure that the power outlet change will work though as all of my computer stuff is plugged into a power strip with an overload switch on it for power spikes.

Ok, so I bought a new psu today and installed it. I can't get windows to load because it shuts down right after the BIOS finishes loading. I switched back to my original power supply and it loaded right up. I checked, double checked, and triple checked all the connections and everything was connected exactly where it should be, but when I power up, it would power down after spooling through the bios splash screen and the black window for starting windows in safe mode (I tried starting normally and in safe mode, same result).

What is the name and model # of the psu?

Try resetting your cmos on the motherboard. Unplug the power and other cables from the dc/dvd drives. Pull any sound cards, modems, network card and the mouse as well as any other peripherals connected to the pc.

pull out all but one stick of ram.

Pull and re seat the video card and disconnect the power and data cable from the hard drive and see if you can start the pc and enter the bios screen ( not sure what key to use to enter bios it may be the delete key) without the pc shutting down. Once inside bios check the voltage readings to get a rough idea as to how psu is functioning.

With the pc off reconnect the hard drive and try to boot into windows.
