I am running Windows ME. When opening internet explorer it comes up to about:blank. It can't be changed. I am getting tons of popups. I ran the cleanup program. I have tried to download adaware and spybot but when I click on download nothing happens. I have also noticed if I type something like google.com it might go there or it might change it to www.www.google.com.com. I was also unable to download AVG. After the third attempt I finally got hijack this. I have no idea where to begin. Following is my hijack this logfile.

dhig3903,

Hello, and welcome to the GeekstoGo Forums. My name is Jfcap, and I will be helping you clean your system. I would like to start off by apologizing in the delay in our response time. We try not to let posts slip through the cracks, but things do happen due the the ammount of posts on our website, so again I apologize.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download SpSeHjfix Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files.Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log, and we can tackle the rest of your infection.

Let me know if you want any questions.

Justin

I tried to download the about:buster by Rubber Ducky and was not able to. I received the cannot find server message. It showed this address at the top - http://69.50.190.131...=dike&type=dike. When I try the CWShredder link I go to a blank page and at the bottom it says done. Same thing with Cleanup. I was able to get the SpSeHjFix downloaded. Where do I go from here?

HELP!!!!!!!!

Thank you for helping me out on this. I am at a total loss.

Hi There,

We will get through this dont worry.

Boot into safe mode. Restart your computer and tap F8 until a menu appears prompting you to boot into safe mode.

Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.(Unless you already ran this fix, then just post the log along with your HJT log.)

Also post a new HiJackThis Log for me to look at.

I can not get the logfile for SpSeHjfix to open. I can't see the log file in the folder but after it restarts the computer it has a spot to click log and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Do you by any chance have a friends house that you can go over to, and download the programs, and then move the downloaded files onto a jump drive or burn them onto a CD?

As for the SpSeHjfix.exe file, you should just be able to open the folder that it is in and double click on SpSeHjfix.exe

Excellent, once you get the files on your computer, unzip them, and then run them according to the directions I gave above.

Then post a HiJackThis log.

I can not get about:buster to download. When it takes me to atribune.org I get a message that says this account has been suspended. Either the domain has been overused or the reseller ran out of resources.

This link should work.

I think I got everything done except the virus scan. I can't get a stable enough connection to stay online any length of time. I still go to about:blank when I open internet explorer.

Following are HJT log, about:buster log and spsehjfix log.

Hello, Thank you for posting the logs.

There is no CWShredder log to post, I was just hoping more stuff would go away =)

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and look for any programs that you do not recognize. Post them in your next reply.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

iau.exe
stisvsq.exe
svshost.exe
msqdevl.exe
mservice.exe
lssas.exe

After that, Reboot.

Then post a new HiJackThis log for me to look at
