It's been a big problem for me recently on Ubuntu - I can't click anything because my mouse seemingly has locked up.

What could be the cause?

What is your kind of mouse - PS/2, USB or integrated (touchpad...) ?
First, check Mouse Preferences.
If that doesn't work, look at your syslog and see what is wrong. Often syslog is very useful.

Ah interesting... what happens if you plug in a USB mouse? If the issue still happens then it's software. If it's fixed then touchpad is playing up, either hardware or drivers.
