i have a 3 yr old gateway, and theres what looks like an empty slot on the back, so can i just unscrew it and put a new USB 2.0 in it or do i have to do something special or look up some special info?

Do you mean a USB PCI card?
If so, then yes it should be fairly straight forward provided your system has a spare PCI slot.

In that case, there shouldn't be a problem. Just power off the machine, insert the usb card, fix it in place & reboot. If the card comes with a driver for XP, then will need to install it when XP detects the new USB controller.
