A few days ago, I downloaded a virus (WORM_MYTOB.ER) from my cable prodivers email account. So I got Norton and I (think) got rid of it. I needed to download a file from a website for Norton, but Internet Explorer has the super secure ActiveX controls (or whatever else it may be that's always keeping me from downloading certain files from certain websites with IE) so I couldn't get the necessary file, not even using my AOL browser.

My friend told me to download Mozilla Firefox browser, and I did. Ever since then, AzeSearch has been installed on the toolbar of my IE and Firefox browsers.

Now, everytime I click on IE and it starts up, on the bottom of the screen it says "Downloading ipreg32.dll..." and eventually "Downloading ipreg32.cab..." and then IE simply freezes.

Then Norton pops up saying I have a trojan (ipreg32.dll) and I should do a full scan. I run a full scan, and Norton ALWAYS fails to quarantine/delete ipreg32.dll. Then, when I shut down and start my PC back up, Norton pops up saying my computer has a virus and that the file was deleted. I click on IE again, and the same exact thing happens. "Downloading ipreg32.dll..." and "Downloading ipreg32.cab..." and then IE freezes again. The process just keeps repeating itself, and Norton pops up again telling me it failed to quarantine/delete the file ipreg32.dll.

What the heck could be going on? Is AzeSearch somehow causing ipreg32.dll to download everytime I start IE up?

Norton doesn't notify me of any viruses if I don't click on IE at all, so I'm guessing ipreg32.dll is deleted now, until I start IE up again.

How do I get rid of both of these annoying things? I'm losing sleep every night staying up trying to figure out how to get rid of these things for the past 4 days. ERRRR! Someone please help...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

I used all the scans TrendMicro found no infected files on my computer. Panda found some files (since they also scan for spyware now, not just for viruses) that were infected and disinfected them automatically, I suppose.

Norton still finds ipreg32.dll and can't delete it eventhough I check for updates everytime before running a scan.

This is getting on my last nerve... I don't think I'm ever going to download a song off the internet again, since there's no way I can be protected.

You don't seem to have Ad-aware or Spybot installed there. Please install those two now and check for updates. Run the system scans and delete what they find.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download FxIstbar, but don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Ad-Protect - it’s rogueware (or known to be rogueware in the past) and we highly recommend that you uninstall it. Rogue/Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

I downloaded and installed Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. I already had Ad-Aware, I'm guessing, because it asked me did I want to uninstall the current version that was on my computer before installing the new one. Well... anywho... Oh, and I removed Ad-Protect from Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and when I did another HiJack This scan, none of the files you told me to delete (if I seen them) were there, so I guess the removal of that was successful.

One thing I forgot to mention is, ever since these viruses, my printer isn't recognized. Whenever I try to print something, it tells me that I need to install a printer, yet there are still files from the printer on my computer.

Does this have anything to do with some of the things I disabled from starting up on the System Configuration Utility? How does this happen all of a sudden? My printer was working fine before all this.

Speaking of the System Configuration Utility... when I click on Startup tab, sky.exe is still listed, but not enabled. Does that mean that it's still not deleted off my system?

I'm about to go crazy because of all this.

Nope, from what I see the fix should not have interfered with your printer. Try uninstalling the printer drivers and reinstalling them again. Or wait until this is all finished to do that.

Can you find that sky.exe file anywhere on your computer? Check it back in msconfig. Restart and post a new HijackThis log.

Well, I got the printer issue resolved... now, there's still that sky.exe file in the msconfig.

I searched for it and nothing came up, and I made sure I checked "search system folders and files" too. Guess it's still somewhere on my system, right?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Well... I did it again. R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = wasn't there, but it was something else that had "azesearch" in it, so I fixed that instead.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\azesearch4.ocx and iasada.dll weren't to be found either, but something similar was in the system32 folder so I deleted them instead and here's my new log:

OK, let's see if they will return in a day or so. So do what you normally do and wait for a day or so to post back your status.

As of now:

Your log is clean.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
