I have windows vista. It is failing to startup properly and startup repair is unable to solve problem. It basically just loops around from start up repair continuously to attempting to reboot again. System restore does not work and 'last good configuration doesnt work either.

Does your Windows Vista have the System Recovery Options installed? If so, repeatedly tap F8 right before the Windows Vista loading screen and a menu should appear. Select System Recovery Options and gain access to the Command Prompt.

Once there, type the following (one line at a time):

C:

chkdsk /r

You might have to alter the first command if the letter of your main drive/partition is not C. For example, if it's E instead, you will have to type E: instead of C: as the first line. If you're unsure of the letter of your main drive, use dir C: to see the contents of the C: drive and do a similar thing for E: and so on until you find out for sure which letter is the root drive.
