My Toshiba laptop running Vista Home Premium was taking so long to boot that it finally got the better of me a week ago. I ran spybot search & destroy and deleted a few highlighted nasties. After that it lockedup with the screen full of horizontal lines and I turned it off. I restarted in safe mode and then in normal mode. Later windows shut down with message "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to the computer." This has happened several times since, each time quoting "0x000000D1." Also it has shut down several times quoting an event "Blue Screen." I returned it to the supplier who did something to the drivers but it is getting worse.

Can you help?

0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
(Click to consult the online Win XP Resource Kit article.)
The system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process IRQL that was too high. The most typical cause is a bad device driver (one that uses improper addresses). It can also be caused by caused by faulty or mismatched RAM, or a damaged pagefile.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

Posted Image

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run. You may have to change the boot sequence in your BIOS to make it work right.

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS

Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

Posted Image

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

Thanks for your response RSHAFFER61,

I have two RAM modules and have tried one at a time only to get two more Windows Shut Downs; one with 0x000000D1 (1astor.sys), and one with 0x00000004.

Also find 'puter is taking increasingly longer to load files - sometimes taking from 2 minutes to 5 after double clicking desktop icon twice.

Is there anything else I can do?

This is not looking good.
Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

In your case you will probably need the Hitachi DFT CD Image version of the software

Hi RSHAFFER61,

I think we're too late - 'puter now wont boot at all!

I thought I'd double check booting computer on one memory stick at a time last night, but when I turned on "Launch Startup Repair (recommended) It repaired the system and took 5 minutes for normal startup, then screen was covered with blue lines.

I switched of then started in safe mode.

Did a system restore which took 18 minutes, then it attempted unsuccessfully to reboot for 20 minutes after which I switched off.

Now all it does on start up is show Toshiba page then Windows icon then hangs on the curser arrow for ever!

Is it time to run windows repair disk?

Can you run the HD diagnostics. This will tell us if the hd itself is bad.

Hi RSHAFFER61,

Hope you had a pleasant break over the festive season!

My problem came to a head when my computer crashed completely.

I ran windows recovery discs and have been re- installing programmes since.

Today I attempted unsuccessfully to install MS Office 2010 and succeeded in bringing on a "Blue Screen" display on my monitor. (or I think it was "BS" - it was a screen full of fine blue and red horizontal lines.) And the computer has now slowed down to taking more than 30 seconds each to load "START", "CONTROL PANEL", "PROGRAMS AND FEATURES", and refuses to uninstal programs such as McAfee Security Scan Plus and MS Office 2007 60 day Trial.

Please help me clean up this mess.

HI Rshafer61,

I looked in Dvice Manager to confirm hard drive manufacturer but cannot find any reference to a hard drive there.

Assumed it is Hatachi and clicked on Tacktech direct link to download DFT but no download - brings up Toshiba Disc Creator program.

Where to from here?

Thanks, John

Go to My Computer
Right Click on your C drive and then click on Properties
In new window click on Hardware Tab
There you will see a list of drives in your system. First one should be your HD.
Please post the name it shows. That will tell me what you have.

Hello RSHAFFER61,

Followed ur instructions - hardware tab shows only one drive and thats the DVD/CD drive.

However I wasable to download the DFT for Hitachi and found my way into BOOT MENU where it shows HDD as FUJITSU MHZ2400BT G1 so I am attempting to download DFT for Fujitsu HDD and wil advise later as to results of the test.

Again my thanks, John

Hi again, According to bios boot menu my HDD is Fujitsu model MHZ2400BT G1. Downloaded FJDT v 6.9 and burned to disc using ImgBurn; changed boot sequence in bios to boot from cd drive; but booted normally from HDD - obviously didn't read cd drive first. Tried to do a new burn but cannot load FJDT (zip folder) as ImgBurn source file. Plse Help. Also FJDT text file is for IDE HDD's. Is this mine or is it SATA? Also FJDT text file only lists 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives up to 2006 and not my cd Model . Will keep trying.

You have to unzip the file first and inside you should find either a iso or img file. That is what the burning software needs to find. Burning it any other way then the instructions say will not allow the disc to be bootable.

I have run Fujitsu DFT boot file and it is only a chkdsc file - it has no microcode tests.

Ran Hitachi DFT boot disc but it was unable to run any meaningful tests on Fujitsu HDD

Is there any other way to prove integrity of Fujitsu HDD?

BS now appearing more regularly.

Thanks for your patient help, erinie0
