Is it seen in My Computer?
Does it read cd's and just not reading dvd's?
Are these disks you have made or are they retail disks?

I didn't ask if it was working in Hardware
Open My Computer and see if it is seen with the hard drive.

Doubtful since the OS loads generic drivers for any optical drive.
It sounds more like the read side of the drive has failed which is why it can't read either dvd or cd's.

You can double check it by trying the drive is another system and see if it works there. If not then it's done.
