I just need someone to point me in the direction of where to find this particular folder on my pc:

C:\$Recycle.Bin

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium and I have searched and searched and so far have not found any good information on how to locate this folder on my computer. My antivirus keeps flagging a file in this location, which I have been told is a keygen which is used for illegal programs or software, but I have no knowledge of any such program being on my machine. This bothers me to know that someone in my household may have downloaded such a program and I have no knowledge of it. Apparently they must have deleted it or it would not be in the recycle bin and now I can't seem to rid myself of this alert from my antivirus. If I can find the folder named C:\$Recycle.Bin, I could remove it from that location and be done with this terrible nightmare. Any help with guiding me to the location of this folder would be appreciated so that I can remove this threat myself.

UPDATE: Son informed me that he inserted his flash drive and had deleted some things he had stored on this drive and this is where this "keygen" thing came from. I will deal with him later, but I need to find out how to access and delete files from within this folder called:
C:\$Recycle.Bin

Hello,

This tool will empty your recycle bin and clean up all the temporary junk files on your system:

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

I don't know that cleaning using this TFC file is going to remove the files since I have already used CCleaner several times to completely clean my pc and this "keygen" file still shows up with the C:\$Recycle.Bin. I have not ever heard of TFC and want to make sure to do this the right way.

Don't worry,

TFC is developed by one of our resident malware experts.

Just give it a go and if that doesn't clear it up try right-clicking on the Recycle Bin icon and then click "Empty Recycle Bin"

P.S. I like your avatar...

I believe the folder you are referencing is one of the hidden system folders and can't be viewed without telling the system to show hidden system files Titantium :D

I know, but she shouldn't have to go poking around in hidden folders. A simple TFC run will clean out the Bin for her...

I have read all the posts since my last reply and if it helps I can tell you that this quarantined file came from here:

C:\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-1485347337-1630680863-2089955664-1001

Thanks on the compliment for the avatar (created by ME!)

Yeah that's the recycle bin. You can right-click on the desktop icon and empty it or run TFC. Your choice :D

You use photoshop?

OK, I went ahead and ran TFC and rebooted, but I am thinking I need to go into my anti virus quarantine and remove/delete the file it has there and then run another scan to see if it quarantines this again? Yes...No ??? What do you suggest?

I use Paint Shop Pro from Corel...Photoshop never interested me, but I hear it is not such a resource hog compared to PSP.

Another scan wouldn't hurt and deleting it from the quarantine is completely up to you.. The software probably wasn't malicious anyway. The keygen was most likely just part of some pirated software your son had on the flashdrive.

Anti-viruses typically jump all over that stuff. Keygens are a good way to get infected though...

Ohhhh I am totally aware now of what keygen's can do. I have done so much research on the subject and I can guarantee one thing...My son is DEAD MEAT! I have turned auto run off on this pc and changed passwords so he is on his own until he can get his own pc. Thanks for all your help and I will let you know how things turn out after another system scan with AVIRA.

Happy New Year !!
