Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop

Sound is static, playing a CD is static, this was an all the sudden problem. Any ideas??

Check in "Device Manager" for any error symbols then post back with your findings.

no error in device manager, says working properly

static is also in ear buds

Not sure if this will work but as your saying its like static it is worth a try.
Shut the laptop off, remove the battery and then hold down the power on button for about 30 seconds or so, this should dispel any charge that may have built up inside the laptop, refit your battery, power up and see how it goes.
If this doesn't help I can only think of a loose internal connection or dust build up which causes static electricity to build up.
