Try opening a command prompt as before and do

nslookup download801.avast.com

I get:
Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: download801.avast.com
Address: 75.125.231.170

Looks like that might be working now so try:

tracert -d download801.avast.com > \junk.txt
notepad /junk.txt

try typing the following in a command window:

proxycfg -d

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ip reset reset.log

Now reboot the machine.

IF that doesn't help then try right click on My Computer and select Manage then Device Manager. Find the Network Adapters in the right pane and click on the + in front of it. For each adapter under Network Adapter, right click and uninstall. When you have have uninstalled all of them then you reboot and let XP rediscover them. (You may have to put in your encryption info for your wireless.)

It's now acting like a firewall is blocking us. Do you have a firewall that asks you if programs are allowed to access the internet?

Do you control the router? It may need to be reset to factory defaults by holding the RESET button on the back for 30 seconds. This will remove any encryption you may be using and set the IP address range back to 192.168.1 or .0

Also did you register Avast? Perhaps they now want you to register before letting it upgrade. Registry is free and they just want a name and email address and location.

Looking back I do not see an Extras log. If you have one please post it. If not:

Run OTL again.

In the Extra Registry group, Select the Use SafeList option. In the File Scans areas set the File Age to 90 Days.
Press the Run Scan button.

You will receive two logs. Please post (copy and paste do not attach) the one called Extras.

Download, Save to your desktop and run mbr.exe:
http://www2.gmer.net/mbr/mbr.exe
It will create a log. Please, open, copy and paste.

Run MBRCheck again. This time tell it Y and select option 1 to create a dump. You want drive 0 and save the file as mbrdumpO.txt. Then ATTACH do not copy and paste the file. (Click on Browse under ATTACHMENTS, point it at the file then Attach This File before you do the final Add Reply. I will submit it to our MBR guru for his opinion.

1.) There have been no notifications or pop ups relating to the Firewall.
2.) I do control the router, I will go reset it.
3.) I did register Avast! when I installed it.
4.) I do have an Extras log on my desktop, I will post it below.
5.) I will download and post the logs from mbr.exe and do the mbrcheck again following your directions.

I downloaded and ran mbr.exe and it seemed to work until the end, the dos screen just sat there and the computer locked up. I restarted the system and tried it again with the same results. I will type what the dos screen outputted. Also it did create a mbr.log but it is blank when opened. Also two new files were created on the desktop and thumbs.db and ~$mplate.doc (both are half transparency).

uninstall:

Spybot - Search & Destroy
BitComet 1.20
BitTorrent 5.0.6
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5

Odd that MBR has a problem creating a log.

Open a command window and

net start > \junk.txt

notepad \junk.txt

copy and paste the result.

I got your dump. Will submit it to our guru and see what he says.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage then Event Viewer. Click on System. In the right pane do you see any recent events? Just want to make sure the event service is running.

While in the Event Viewer, right click and Clear All Events. (No we don't want to make a copy).

Repeat for Applications.

close event viewer.

Now open My Computer and navigate to C:\program Files and see if there is an AVG folder. If so please delete it then try Combofix.

Reboot and run Vino Event Viewer program as before.

2. Double-click VEW.exe
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.
