auto sleep mode!

I am getting very frustrated with my computer now!!! It is suddenly going into 'auto-save' mode while I am in the middle of something, and will not come out of it. So I have to turn off my computer without shutting it down properly. Then when I restart, the colors are all messed up and the font is enlarged.
I was finally able to run virus scans, but nothing turned up.
Help!!!! Where do I look for help with this??
