Happy New Year. Hi, and thank you for this forum. i am soryy this is posted twice, i was trying to edit and it came up again on the forum.

System info: Hp Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS, Compaq Presario F700 Notebook (F765CA), Product# KP027UA#ABC

1)Have to use F8, last known configuration, for start up. Otherwise the screen stays grey, with a tiny flashing bar on top left. Eventually it says "Operating System not found". Event Viewer shows, Boot Driver Missing as of Dec23/10.

2} Had to restart again today as Avast required this for an update. It was almost impossible to even use F8.

3) After hours of study found the new driver needed in the device manager. It is
" NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management.

4) The problem is that, in my Device Manager, the driver properties for this device show " no driver installed ", while the driver details show the 3 files for it, as if it were installed.
Files \system32\NVCOSMB.DLL ... \system 32\nvsmb.nvu ... \system32\nvsmb.exe

5)I tried to update this driver and NVIDIA showed " up to date ", as if it were installed. Then I rolled back the driver and it updated alright. My computer started up correctly twice and then today, after I had to restart for an Avast update, it was almost impossible to start up even with F8. It took multiple tries with frantic beeping as F8 was pressed. When I then checked the Event Viewer it showed " diver was dumped ".

6)I tried to find the correct driver to install on the NVIDIA site, using all the procedures shown, and could not find it. So, I am afraid to uninstall the driver? , or the files for it. I realize that I should not turn off the computer again, even for updates.

I am just learning and fear I may ruin my computer.
Thank You for your thoughts on this and help is much appreciated, athome34.

HI, Thank you for you quick reply. Much appreciated.

I somehow suspected an update problem as the new HP support fails on the updating, gathering info and
system analysis testing I simply can not get any thing other then Widows Imp. updates and had no idea
what to do really. All the reading didn't get me to the right spot.

i am very glad that you redirected me and will use the Secunia scanner tomorrow and read your other link.

Will report back. Thank you again for helping.
PS: When i tried to edit my first post it showed twice in the forum. What
did I do wrong?????

Hi,

I have scanned my computer with the OSI test as your link suggested and there are no insecure programs and
no lack of patches. Updates are all fine.

I notice that on my Windows update History page that NVIDIA nForve PCI and Synaptic Touch Pad updates failed.
Among the updates one NVIDIA nforce PCI update installed on 05/2009. This is right in the middle of the failed to install updates for NVIDIA nForce PCI. There is no driver shown for it on the device manager though. Funny think is a driver is shown for the Synaptic touch Pad.

I noticed on HP Costumer Care Site a test for Compaq Presario F765CA Notebook for " Operating System not found" I linked to it via 1} Solve a Problem 2} Start up/ Shutdown 3}Error Message during Start up/ Shutdown
4}Operating System not found Error message shows on Black Screen. 5}Error message found on Black Screen.. Operating System not Found.

I would like to do the tests for this but there are 2 types and I do not know which to use. One is for the message, " Error message Appears on Black Screen....Operating System not Found". This is the message I get but it is for Win XP and WIN 2000. Here there is a link for Win7 and Vista, my OS, but the message shown for using these tests is
" Boot Drive not found...etc.", not my message at all. I am stumped and want to run the right test group before I attempt driver updates or installations.

Your help is much appreciated. Thank you, athome34

Drivers for laptops are supplied by the laptop manufacturer via their website.
Go here and click on the purple text to expand the list. Choose the exact model number from the list (look underneath the laptop casing): http://h10025.www1.h...ario F700&=#N29
