Hello, I just got a new Acer Aspire 5742 and replaced its hard drive with one from my old laptop.

When I first booted up the laptop with the new Hard drive everything worked fine except for a few driver errors.

I got most of them fixed, but there is one that I am struggling with greatly to resolve and need some help.

My display adapter in the device manager is giving me the following error:

"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."

The graphics driver I am trying to install is for Intel HD Graphics,
I am running on the Windows 7 home premium 64 bit OS. (Not sure if this is the problem, the acer comes as 32-bit but the processor can do 64-bit)

I have tried just uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.
That doesnt work because it always defaults to installing the standard VGA graphics driver on startup.

I have also got the chipset drivers in and everything else working properly.

I looked on microsoft support site for how to fix it, but that also was not very helpful.

Somebody suggested in one forum to this other guy to just take out the
CMOS battery for about a min, then put it back in and turn it on.
Also did not work.

Is there anybody here that is willing to help walk me through to resolving the problem? I would be really grateful!

Hi elementis,

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."

Im not familiar with W7 so forgive me if your control panel is different,go to Control Panel>Device Manager>Display Adapters>Click on the + sign>Right Click on the display adapter>Properties>Resources, this should tell you what other device is conflicting with the display adapter.
Your computer is fine with the 64bit OS some vendors ship their Acer Aspire 5742 laptops with the 64bit preloaded, it could be an OS issue of some sorts or a BIOS issue but as you have cleared the BIOS it may suggest the OS.

The graphics driver I am trying to install is for Intel HD Graphics

Any more details available than this such as a type code? http://downloadcenter.intel.com/

Hello, I greatly appreciate you getting back to me.

Thank you for your suggestion, but I have already tried that.

Under the resources tab I am not given the conflicting device, I only am shown a message saying something along the lines of "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use, if you want to use this device you will need to disable another of the devices in the system"

I think thats windows way of saying I don't know where the problem is.

Heres some info on the GFX driver I downloaded:

Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows 7* 64 and Windows Vista* 64 (exe)
Installs graphics driver version 15.21.5.64.2266 (8.15.10.2266) for Intel® integrated graphics.

Heres where I got it:

The best suggestion I can make at the moment then is uninstall one item at a time and see if the issue is resolved, if it isnt reinstall the last uninstalled device and move on to the next device, do this until you find the conflicting device and we can then look at how to resolve the issue overall.
How are you connecting to the internet, WIFI or LAN? Whichever one you are not using uninstall first, you may get lucky and it may be the device that is causing the issue.
