My sister haa a Windows XP with Service pack 2. When she tries to start it up, it gets to the point right before the log-in screen and then it goes black. Nothing I do will get it to light again. I managed to get it started in safe mode, only to find that the virus protection (avast) had run out, and she didn't say anything.

Does anyone have an idea of what's causing this?

Hi Aryia :D
You need to provide information about your computer, this includes is it
a laptop or desktop, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP
and if it is provide the model name or series number, motherboard, PSU and
any add on card details would also help others to help you better.

If you are able to run in safe mode then I suspect that you have a video display problem. Without further info as requested then we can't tell you if it is a driver, video card, or main board.
We need to know what you have.
