I have a averatec laptop. xp home edition.

When I go to start up the computer, it says "windows did not start successfully. I tried starting in safe mode, but still nothing. Any suggestions?

You have windows xp proffesional or home ? If you have proffesional, boot from the cd of your windows xp proffesional and repair it as it says HERE. If you have windows xp home edition, try the same as above with the cd of windows xp home.
