Kaspersky Online Scanner is doing a "database update" right now, and it's been about a half hour already. Is that right?

1. "Another anti-virus software was detected: Windows Defender" I checked and Defender is turned off. What is "Defender"?

2. Under advanced settings, "Enable anti-stealth technology" was checked as a default. I unchecked it.

I am proceding with the scan.

"Another anti-virus software was detected: Windows Defender" I checked and Defender is turned off. What is "Defender"?

Windows Defender, formerly known as Microsoft AntiSpyware, is a software product from Microsoft to prevent, remove, and quarantine spyware in Microsoft Windows. It is included and enabled by default in Windows Vista and Windows 7, and is available as a free download for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. (From Wikipedia)

Under advanced settings, "Enable anti-stealth technology" was checked as a default. I unchecked it.

OK.

Please let me know the result.

Huh. We don't have luck with those scanners. OK. Here is another one.

Please go HERE to run Panda's TotalScan
  • Select the bubble for Full scan
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • Then the scan will begin
  • When the scan completes, click the Save button on the right of Scan details
  • Save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the TotalScan report
Fingers crossed

"Sorry, updating is incomplete due to an error. Please try again."

I tried several times.

I do have my Security Essentials real-time protection turned off, in case you were wondering.

I had a strange message while I was running the setup. I forgot already, but it was something to do with saying that my internet connection was no longer working. There's nothing wrong with it.

The scan is running.

It seems that your computer is clean. Now you can proceed with re-formating of your infected PC. If you need further assistance just ask.

Great! Thank you! I do not plan to reformat the old pc at this time. I want to keep the hard drive around in case there are any more files I forgot to move.

I would like to scan my work laptop to see if that is clean. I'm not aware of any problems. That has Windows XP. What do you recommend? As I said before, I'm a software analyst in the IT dept. The desktop guys don't know much about viruses. They would just reimage the disc. The more I think about it, I would like to save them that trouble if the laptop is clean.
