Computers with high CPU usage on idle

Good evening,

I have a computer with a strange problem. It's an old laptop running Windows XP which is used occasionally by my family. Everything was OK until a few days ago, when a friend borrowed the computer from me and brought to his home for a day. He tried connecting to his home's wireless connection, but connected to a random open wireless lan, which claimed to be "free internet hotspot". No internet access was granted though. The computer came back to my home on the same day.

Since then, the computer is extremely slow to boot up and very very laggish when using. Also, I can't shut it down normally. The task manager shows me the "SYSTEM" is using ~95% of the CPU, and I guess it's because of that it is so slow. I can't access the Internet either (browser crashes when I enter any address).

I've been looking around trying to find more info, and what I noticed is that if I disable the wireless (button on the laptop) before turning on the computer, the CPU usage on idle is ~20%, and I can shutdown the computer and work with it normally (well, it is still slow to boot up; other than that, works fine). If I switch the wireless to ON, I immediately get the CPU to ~90% and it won't go back down, even if I turn it back off later on.

It might be some sort of virus, and/or something went wrong with wireless configs after connecting to that "free internet hotspot" network?

I managed to get OTL from a USB pen to it, here's the log (I wrongly did normal scan instead of quick scan, sorry. I'd post the quick one now, but I won't be at home for a day or two):

Hello Gnitrops and welcome to G2G! :D

My nick is maliprog and I'll will be your technical support on this issue. Before we start please read my notes carefully:

NOTE:
  • Malware removal is NOT instantaneous, most infections require several courses of action to completely eradicate.
  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Kindly follow my instructions in the order posted. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans or fix on your own without my direction.
  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described.
  • If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply.
  • You must reply within three days or your topic will be closed

Let's try to determinate if you are infected or it's system malfunction...

Step 1

Do you recognize this file:

C:\Program Files\tmn\tmn\tmn.exe

Step 2

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    O33 - MountPoints2\{384ade8e-7707-11db-8c15-0002c7e6f4ec}\Shell - "" = AutoRun
    O33 - MountPoints2\{384ade8e-7707-11db-8c15-0002c7e6f4ec}\Shell\AutoRun\command - "" = G:\LaunchU3.exe
    O33 - MountPoints2\{5d2ef10d-9e04-11dc-8c8c-0013a92b77ac}\Shell\Auto\command - "" = RavMon.exe e
    O33 - MountPoints2\{6a96013b-9d0c-11dc-8c8a-0013a92b77ac}\Shell\Auto\command - "" = RavMon.exe e
    O33 - MountPoints2\{8d514ec0-105a-11dd-8ca9-0013a92b77ac}\Shell - "" = AutoRun
    O33 - MountPoints2\{8d514ec0-105a-11dd-8ca9-0013a92b77ac}\Shell\AutoRun\command - "" = H:\setup.exe AUTORUN=1
    O33 - MountPoints2\{d2fffe7e-9aaf-11dc-8c87-0013a92b77ac}\Shell\Auto\command - "" = RavMon.exe e
    O33 - MountPoints2\{d2fffe81-9aaf-11dc-8c87-0013a92b77ac}\Shell\Auto\command - "" = RavMon.exe e

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [emptyflash]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the fix log it produces in your next reply.

Step 3

Download GMER from Here. Note the file's name and save it to your root folder, such as C:.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with this file.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
  • Double-click on the downloaded file to start the program. (If running Vista, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Allow the driver to load if asked.
  • You may be prompted to scan immediately if it detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "No", save the log and post back the results.
  • If not prompted, click the "Rootkit/Malware" tab.
  • On the right-side, all items to be scanned should be checked by default except for "Show All". Leave that box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click the Scan button to begin. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete)
  • When the scan is finished, click Save to save the scan results to your Desktop.
  • Save the file as Results.log and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
  • Exit the program and re-enable all active protection when done.

Step 4

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Step 5

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • OTL fix log
  • GMER log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post

Hello maliprog, and thanks for your time and patience to help me!

Here we go :D

Step 1

Do you recognize this file:

C:\Program Files\tmn\tmn\tmn.exe

Yes, it is a program from a mobile ISP I used to have. It is OK to remove though.

Run OTL

I have ran OTL according to your instructions. Sadly, the computer failed to reboot after completing the procedure. I did the reboot manually and it produced the log.

[GMER]
[*]Double-click on the downloaded file to start the program. (If running Vista, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")

I can't have GMER to run. The screen freezes when I double-click it, and then the computer hangs with a blue screen of death, and reboots.

Should I proceed with the next steps, skipping this one, or is there a work around?

I'm posting the OTL log on the next reply.

Cheers,
Gnitrops

Hi Gnitrops,

Instead GMER please run Rootkit UnHooker. After this proceed to Step 3

Rootkit UnHooker (RkU)
Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

User returned!

Hi Gnitrops,

Download ComboFix here :

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you don't know how to disable them then just continue on.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.

Removed AVG with apparent success. Is it possible now I can't run ComboFix? (It shows the small window that should fill up with green bars, but it stands there...). I will insist running it, but is there any alternatives?

This is getting on my nerves :\

Hi Gnitrops,

There is no need to panic.....jet :D

Step 1

Please try to run Combofix in safe mode.

To restart in safe mode:
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Step 2

  • Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
  • Click the "Scan" button to start scan
  • Click the "Fix" in case of infection

    Posted Image
  • Click Save log button and Save the aswMBR.log to the desktop
  • Post content of that log here for me

Step 3

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

    Posted Image
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

    Posted Image
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

    Posted Image
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

    Posted Image
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hi maliprog,

Except for Recovery Console (Safe Mode doesn't let me connect to the Internet to download it), all steps were successful!

Here are the logs:
