Can't play movies or videos anymore

My computer cannot play a movie or video for more than a few second without having to stop and work to download some more and it continues doing this. I did not have this problem before My Christmas vacation. I did have a house sitter but they don't seem to know why it might be doing this. I used a forum answer on Computer Hope to download Hijack This and took Adobe reader off my machine which helped to get some space back but the movie and video thing was still going on.
I am not really tech savy so I am not sure what to do next or if I screwed up all ready with Hijack This. HELP!
