Repair Installation Instructions

· Insert your Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM and then Restart your computer.

· At the first post screen start tapping the Del key to enter System Bios
· Find the Advance Options or Boot Sequence screen.
· You will need to change the boot sequence so that the CDrom is first and the HD is second.
· Press F10 to Save and Exit and then press Enter to accept.
· The system will now reboot
· When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
· When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER
· To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
· At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. DO NOT SELECT THIS OPTION.

· On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
· Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected and highlighted in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.
· Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Just to jump in for a minute - I believe TFC is shutting down apps/services prior to shutting down. If it's hanging, most likely there's something it can't stop for some reason - I really don't thinks it's a Windows issue per se. Since the developer of TFC, Oldtimer, is here on our site, I'm going to ask him for his input.

Hi Dave. My first thought would be that it might have something to do with MS Updates. If there are updates pending and the system attempts to shut down, an update dialog will intercept that call and ask if you want to perform the updates. The first thing to try is to go to the MS Update site and get all the available updates. Keep going back there and doing that until all available updates are installed. The reason that the icon keeps reappearing is most likely because there are additional updates to install that cannot all be installed at once.

If that doesn't solve the problem then the next most likely cause is an application in your startup is hanging . Use MSConfig to disable all of the startup programs, reboot, and then try having TFC reboot the system. If that works then it is one of the programs in your startup. Start enabling one or two at a time, rebooting, and trying TFC again until you find out which one.

What you are saying makes perfect sense to me so first up I will go for the updates and proceed as OT suggests.

When this updates thing first started and I went looking for info on possible problems with it, I seem to recall reading something about a "false update." Might be worth you guys using your network of contacts to check that one out. If there is some crap thing hiding in my system and putting up a false alert, it would tie in with exactly what you are suggesting OT. IT's food for thought at least in the meantime, I'm off to Microsoft

OT, you're a bloody genius mate and I take nothing away from all the help I have been given by RSHAFFER61 and SARI

So here is what happened:

Turned off automatic updates for windows then went and got the damned things Interestingly, with auto updates turned on, I got nothing -- something for the memory bank

Ran TFC, same damned result

Got into msconfig and bearing in mind what OT mentioned about a program not shut down, VOILA, there it damned well was. A mongrel thing that comes as a package with Nero Express, which I had reinstalled a short time back. Blockhead me failed to put 2+2 together <slaps self on cheek>

Disable indcd, rebooted, tried TFC and it works like a charm. Yeeeeha as the Americans would say, but being a true blue Aussie, I say, YOU BLOODY BEAUTY!

I must apologize for my suggestion on the repair installation and admit I have learned something from this topic as well. Hello guys and gals. I must have a different problem than the OP. Here's screen shot of msconfig. I only have 3 start ups. I will turn them off one at a time and see what happens. It very well could be one of them causing the problem as they are constantly up dating all the time. If I were to suspect one, it would be MBAM running in real time.

Although your issue may seem similar there can be other factors that may need to be resolved.
By bumping on someone's topic it makes it confusing for the tech to understand who they are helping. This can in turn cause the wrong support to be given and can cause instability or worse to happen to your system. Thank you for your cooperation.

The OP already solved his problem and this is a old solved thread. I was only commenting and don't see why that should confuse any one. I wasn't asking for help. I also don't understand why just a member can't comment on another member's post. I was advised to delete my screen prints. If my screen print was still valid, their would be no confusion. I hear what your saying. I don't want any help with TFC. I already know what's wrong also!

I directed you to this topic as a resource to help you with a similar issue with TFC. You argued when I told you to use msconfig to disable startups. When admin advised you that Emsisoft was more likely the culprit, not MBAM (as many of us use the full version of MBAM), you decided you weren't going to pursue it further. You didn't simply comment on this post, you said you had a different problem and you were going to disable your startups to determine the problem. Now you state you know the problem. If that's the case you should post the solution in your original thread, as it could help someone else. If you want help with something, accept the help. Otherwise, don't post for no reason.
