My mic doesnt work

I've bought and tried over 3-4 headsets thinking that it was the headset's mic that wasn't working. After the 4th headset Ive realized that I have a problem with my sound card i think. My headset works fine but the quality/sound distinction for example gunshots in a game i would not be able to tell where the shots are coming from. So i was wondering if someone could help me figure this out. Thanks in advance; i'm using RealTek HD Audio.
