Mic doesnt work

My mic for some reason is not working. I have bought 3-4 different headsets but to no avail. I just need help in solving what is wrong w/my mic. My sounds are fine, and my mic only works on some application while it doesnt work on others like "sound recorder". etc.

If the above doesn`t resolve the issue let us know what programmes the mic does work with and anything other than sound recorder that the mic does not work with, this may help to establish a pattern.
