I have got HP Pavilion dv 1000. It is 5 years old. I got this error message:

Smart Failure predicted on hard disk.

Warning: Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.

The current status is when ever i press the power button on laptop, a blank screen appears and windows are not loading. They are not loading on safe mode as well.

I did a Hard Drive Self Test- SMART test and my hard disk has passed the test. As a rule, HP does not replace a hard drive that does not fail the HP Hard Drive Self Test.

Please help me out. Big thanks in advance for expert guidance.

Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, try the Hitachi DFT CD Image version of the software

Thanks rshaffer61. Here is an another problem:

The CD rom in that laptop is also not working for last 3 years and is not attached to the laptop because it was creating problems when the PC used to start . I dont have an external CD rom.

How should i proceed now?

Is the system capable of booting to a usb flash drive?

It will be in the bios under bootable devices or in the boot sequence you can check to see if it allows for USB boot device.

Hard Drive

Network Adaptor

Hmm check the bootable device area. In there somewhere should be a place that says something about using USB

Ok it seems then since it is not a option in the boot area yours cannot boot to the usb.
How old is this system cause most systems built since 2005 have been capable of booting to a usb device.

Thanks Rshaffer61..I have purchased this system in June 2005, so i think i just missed getting a system capable of USB booting.

Do you think changing hard disk can solve the problem? Also if i take this system to repair, can the repair engineer put an old hard disk to confirm if it is a hard disk problem before i purchase a new hard disk?

If you take it to a shop they will take the drive out and test it by hooking it to another system and running diagnostics on it then. Depending on the size of the drive you have they don't cost that much anymore as seen HERE

The only reason I suggest a repair shop is because of the lack of a working cdrom drive so we can run the diagnostics ourselves here.
I myself believe your hd is failing or has failed and needs to be replaced.
