Can you just connect directly to the cable modem? And try the speed test again? Probably have to reset or cycle power on the cable modem. They have a tendency to learn the MAC address of the router and not want to talk to anyone else. If not try connecting directly to the modem with a cable instead of wireless.

I'd power cycle the modem. IF you have already done that then I think you need to talk to the cable company. They can do a loopback test that tells them if their modem is bad.

Looks like a worthwhile purchase. Quite a difference.

Is this all pages that load like that or just some of them? Does it do this if you run Firefox in its safe mode?

Sometimes a webpage will call a link to another webpage to show an ad or something and it could be your charter DNS is a bit on the slow side. Let's try using google's DNS.

1. Click "Start," click "Control Panel," click "Network and Internet Connections," and then click "Network Connections."
2. Right-click the network connection that you want to configure (the one you use to connect to the Internet), and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab (for a local area connection), or the Networking tab (for all other connections), click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", and then click "Properties."

4. Click "Use the following DNS server addresses," and then type 8.8.8.8 in the Preferred DNS server and 4.2.2.1 in the Alternate DNS server boxes.

5. Click "OK"

Reboot and try it now.

For most purposes the free Avast (now version 6 as of this week) or Avira are good enough perhaps with the addition of the free Online Armor firewall. IF you want to buy one then Kaspersky or BitDefender would be the way to go.

I tried it in safe mode and it still hung up a bit, then changed to the google DNS and tried it again regular and in safe mode and it is still doing it.

would not having XP up to date do it? I just tried getting the service pack 3 and it gave me some error about "access being denied" and then unistalled it.

thanks

You may have Vino's already. Have to run so don't have time to look but run it and post the results. That may show why it didn't want to work.

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Double-click VEW.exe
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.
