Is it possible in Windows 7 to change the mouse to left handed if the mouse is not a Microsoft model?

I originally bought a new microsoft wireless mouse this morning but it was faulty so I took it back and bought a wired Gigabyte mouse instead (they had no microsoft wireless Mice).

Yes it should be that simple but unfortunately none of the buttons in C0ntrol panel, mouse are clickable.

In bold type is "No Microsoft USB mouse detected". So it appears if I don't have a Microsoft mouse I have to use it right handed.

Hi, yes this is the same laptop where you posted that helpful article.

I sometimes use the touchpad but prefer a mouse as I have a great deal of clicking to do.
I can use it this way but much prefer the buttons to be set for left handed.

As I said the guy in the shop where I bought the mouse had a quick go and I have tried too but I get this message
"No Microsoft USB mouse detected".
I could buy a microsoft mouse but it would be great if I could get this one going.

I have not installed a driver, it did not come with a disc.

Thanks for posting that link, it appears to be a driver for the M8000X mine is a GM-M5050 wired optical mouse.

Editing to add, doing a google search and doing a lot of looking around I do not think there is a driver for the GM-M5050 USB mouse.

Also how do I find out if my Windows 7 that came pre installed is 32 bit or 64 bit?

I should have said that this was merely the link to the Gigabyte site, but you appear correct there is not a driver.
To find out if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following:

• Open System by clicking the Start button , right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.
• Under System, you can view the system type.

Have a look at this and also check in device manager to see if the mouse is seen and recognised.

I think we may have it now.

The settings for the Microsoft mouse, that did not work, if they were installed when you connected, by Windows are still there and conflicting, so preventing the recognition of the Gigabyte one from the point of altering those settings in Control Panel.

It is the 64 bit version of Windows 7.

I read the link regarding the mouse, understand the symptoms and cause but the resolution is so complicated.

downloaded and ran the file, but a message boc came up telling me I already have this installed.

In control panel, mouse properties, there is a link "how do I enable features", this is what it says
"To enable the features included with this software, you must use a Microsoft USB mouse. PS/2 mice and non-Microsoft devices will not work with this software. Some older Microsoft USB mice are also not supported. If you plug in and use a supported Microsoft USB mouse, features associated with that mouse will be enabled.

If you want support for a PS/2 device, or for a Microsoft USB mouse that is not detected, download a version of this software earlier than 8.0 (do not use a USB-to-PS/2 adapter, or use a Y-shaped adapter). In your case, is it not just a question of checking if you have Intellipoint installed and if so uninstalling it

From the Microsoft article I sent you. This is WHY its reports No Microsoft mouse installed.

Step 2: Remove and reinstall the IntelliPoint software

Sorry to have been a bit thick on this matter, I guess that's why I am a Builder (no offense to other builders).

I deleted the Intellipoint 8 program and restarted the laptop and was able to change the settings on the mouse.

Thank-you so much for the help, I am so releived to be able to use the mouse this way round.

And just to make it clear, you don't need to be using a Microsoft mouse to use the mouse settings in Control Panel, it can be any brand of mouse that's using the default Microsoft mouse driver that's included with Windows (not additional mouse software which will conflict with the settings in Control Panel). All mice will automatically use the Microsoft mouse driver for basic functions as long as you don't install any other mouse driver software.
