Floating Browser window

Hi,

Recently I had the 'clicksearchclick' browser hijack problem that took days to finally resolve (thanks to Geeks To Go!). My P4 2.4 GHz is as speedy as when I bought it now.

However I now have new issue with a 'floating browser' pop-up. It looks like a regular notepad type box, without all the control buttons in the upper right corner (just a tiny 'x'). Also, the title bar only has a period to the extreme left side. A few seconds after this window shows up, a message can be seen that says Page Cannot Be Displayed. It doesn't seem to slow down my system, but it's annoying just the same.

I followed all the options & program downloads for eradicating any malware, but to no avail. I ran the latest definitions of my Norton Antivirus Corporate edition, but it found nothing (scanning ALL files). Below is the latest 'HiJack This' log file. Attached is a snapshot of the pop-up (if I did it right):
Attached File  Blank_Pop_Up.bmp   186.05KB   108 downloads

Any help is appreciated! :tazz:

Hello pcgodusa and welcome to the GTG forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.do-jaja.c...arch/index.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.do-jaja.c...arch/index.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = www.mamma.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = www.mamma.com
O2 - BHO: CIEObject Object - {5D647E9C-6B37-4636-9A78-DADB1EB93BDF} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\CtxPopup.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wupd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.boxsearch.net
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.brdatahost.com
O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} (MetaStreamCtl Class) - https://components.v...MetaStream3.cab? url=http://www.viewpoint.com/cgi-bin/compaq.v2/vet_install_popup.pl?1&4&04.00.07.02 -hp&http://h71016.www7.h...000/model.html? jumpid=in_r329_3d/nbt/zd7000|pdp|viewpoint
O16 - DPF: {527196A4-B1A3-4647-931D-37BA5AF23037} - http://69.50.171.170/traff/1/open.exe
O16 - DPF: {EC51659D-721F-4CBF-9CEA-5E776D89CEA9} - http://www.pacimedia...ll/pcs_0002.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\CtxPopup.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32.exe

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #7

AdAware SE v1.06

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE v1.06:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Right-click on the list and choose Select All
  • Click the Next button to finish removing the items that were found
  • When finished, REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found
Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi pcgodusa. Some of it went away but there is still some parts hanging on. Let's try again and see if we can get it.

Step #1

We need to disable TeaTimer so it does not interfere with the fixes we are about to do.
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = www.mamma.com
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wupd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32.exe
Now perform a search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.
Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

You can re-enable TeaTimer now also:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Check Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.

Thanks OT,

I followed your instructions and think I got everything. I have a question about a section of your directions that call for me to delete the following file:
[/b]

What does this mean? I performed the search, and the only result I receive is to contacts in my Outlook email. I'm sure you don't want me to delete people from my address book.

Anyway, here is my latest HiJack log:

Hi pcgodusa. Your log is clean. Good job! How are things running? Any problems?

The portion of my previous directions regarading searching for files was my mistake. That should not have been in there and I missed taking it out. Sory.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Hi OT,

Thank you VERY much for your help! :tazz:

My laptop is running great once again. I thought I was protecting my system as best as I could, but spyware/adware still made it through, slowing me down to literally a crawl. ;)

I do have one concern: won't having too many spywaremalware detection programs running at once (5 in all) along with my virus protection, and a firewall program (anything wrong with the built-in Microsoft Firewall?) be any overkill? I am already using an antivirus program along with spybot resident. Just wondering...

Other than that, thanks again! :help:

You're very welcome pcgodusa. I'm glad that we could help.

Basically you should have 1 anti-virus program, 1 firewall and I would recommend 1 anti-spyware program (like SpywareGuard, MS AntiSpyware, ewido, etc). Yes, having too many can cause problems. The programs like SpywareBlaster and IE-SPYAD are not running programs and do not provide active protection. What they do is add known malware related sites to your IE Restricted Zone so that if an attempt is made to redirect your browser to one of these sites it is not permitted to go there.

Now that your issues have been resolved I will close this topic. If you need it reopened for this same issue then please PM me. If you have any new issues in the future then please start a new topic.

Cheers.

Keep on computing!
