dvd burner not reading

I have used my Asus DVD burner in my pc for two years . It will burn dvds but will not read any more. .I can see it trying to start but doesn't manage to reach full speed. Cds will burn and read OK.

It's easiest if you think about that burner as being two separate drives in the same case. One is a CD drive and the other is a DVD drive. They use different lasers, and it's quite common for one of them to burn out, or just drift so far off frequency that it doesn't work any more.

In any case, it's time for a new drive. They are so cheap anymore, from $19.95, that they aren't worth messing with, once they start getting wonky.

I have to agree with TheShadowFl's assessment of your issue.
The dvd side of the drive has failed with the read part of that laser. Replacement is the best option.
