Hi.
This is not really a Malware issue I am thinking...Anyway from what you have posted it may be a possible Memory Module(Random Access Memory) related issue with your friend's machine. You could physically check to ensure the module(s) are seated correctly in the actual Mother-Board and or if multiple installed remove one at a time to see if one has failed and if the machine boots up that is the culprit. However before actually doing so do, observe Anti-Static procedure as a precaution.
Not a lot else I can advise I'm afraid as my area of expertise if you will is Anti-Malware Support, so it would probably be a good idea to seek further assistance in this part of the forum:-
