Running WinXPSP3.
My DVD writer has just packed up and I've ordered two SATA DVD writers. I
was going to save one of the units as a spare because I've only got one SATA
port remaining on the motherboard (I only have two ports and the hard disk
is connected to one of them). Is it possible however to buy an additional
cable that will connect to both DVD writers and then will connect to my one
remaining SATA port? If so, what is the exact name of the cable that I
require please?
Many thanks
Andrew Wilson
PS Have googled but that's left me more confused than ever!

The answer is NO. Not in the way you are looking for.

In simple terms SATA devices have no recognition of master slave cable select. on the actual device., in the manner you would need to use them.
So you cannot buy a sata data cable that has two connections for the drive, as with the IDE type, one master and one slave, on a cable select jumper position

You have a choice.

connected internally to a PCI connector on the motherboard, presuming there is one spare.

OR if it is not too late change one of the optical drives for IDE.
