Hi,

I was looking for a .tar.gz file extraction software for backup site files that I want to upload to another host. I downloaded a number of applications (which I've uninstalled in the meantime) - I think one was this UniExtract one - and now cannot read ANY of the zip files on my pc.

All the zip files on my pc says Type: UniExtract and no application to open my files. Plse help! I now have 2 problems: I still don't know how to extract .tar.gz files and cannot read my zip files.

Thanks a lot,
Di

What happened was when you uninstalled the programme it failed to reset the associations

Go to this page and use the registry fix to restore it (although it states it is a zip file in the text, it is actually a registry file )

So happy to get your response, EssexBoy!

Only, I can't even download a new zip folder - it just shows up blank (see screen shot and zip file
attached).

As you can see the zipfix file I can download as a 'bloc de notas' file, but the zip file is empty,
or something.

Thanks,
Di

As it is a registry fix - once you have it on your desktop double click the file and allow it to merge with the registry. On your desktop it should look like this . . If it opens as a notepad file when you do that then right click the file and select merge

I cannot open this regfix zip file, and haven't seen/been able to get to
anything like "Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop.
Right-click the REG file and choose Merge.."

In desperation clicked on some button to try another application to open
the zip file, and now have this on my desktop - getting worse - see screenshot.

Did you right click the file when it was on your destop and select merge ?

To get ZIP back in Windows Vista, click Start, All Programs,
Accessories. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
Click through the User Account Control folderol. When the command prompt
comes up, type:

assoc .zip=CompressedFolder

and then press Enter.

I did this, but it doesn't do anything - it just returns
C:\Windows\system32>
repeatedly - see ss.

P.S: about this: Did you right click the file when it was on your destop and select merge ?
I just got a response, something like can't open ...

I cannot open ANY zip files. I download them and when I open them they look like this:
(File Assoc Fixer) Can you see the attached screen shot/s?

Will it help if I uninstall Textpad?

Yes, that corrected it!

EssexBoy, You are amazing for helping me out like this, thanks so much! - I owe you.

(I'm going to forget about the .tar.gz unzipper for now. I have access to a
mac and I'm gonna download the site files, unzip them there and transfer
them to my pc)

Any advice for me at this stage - to prevent any further damage I can do, or
the pc can do to me?! Or further cleanup/recovery I should do from time to time?

Thanks again,
Di

If you wish to use a programme to unzip the various format files then I would recommend Peazip, I use it and have never had a problem. If you uninstall it, it reverts everything back to the correct settings

A spring clean comes in handy sometimes

SPRING CLEAN

Clear Cache/Temp Files
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter
For the first run I would recommend a boot defrag and disk check

Hi,

Just quickly, the peazip program seems complicated to me, installing and using it.

Is it ok if I just install the basic program without toolbars and such. And then
there are many choices to make that I'm unsure of when extracting.

Is there a simpler unzip program that I can use?

But maybe there's something wrong with my pc, as another unzip program I'm trying
extract the files like this (as well), see attached ss. Then when I click on a file,
for example I need to change the config file, but it opens in a win media file.

I don't have a clue about this! In the meantime, I'm not getting anything done -
plse let me know what you think.

Thanks!
