I have several files that were saved as Word documents but many of them now come up as DOTX or DOCX files. When I try to open them they are a bunch of tiny squares and other symbols. I don't know how this happened or how to fix it. Can I get the files back to read as regular Word documents or are they gone forever?

Both DotX and DocX are standard file extensions in Office 2007
Which are you using and which were thery created on

If they have been created in Office 2007 or 10 and yours is earlier see this
