With all the different OS's, and all the different versions of each OS and then all the different add-ons that can change the look of things, it's a wonder that anybody can ever find anything.

I had the same problem with that "Administrative (whatever)". On my XP PC the "whatever" is "Tools".
Then in the View of the Control Panel, it helps if everybody has that set to "Icons".
But everybody doesn't have their PC's all set up the same, so directing someone to a specific place can be like an old farmer trying to direct somebody. It can get kind'a crazy.
I sit here reading directions and half the time I can't find the place either. I find those error messages about as cryptic as trying to read a Russian physics book.

It's regrettable, that we who try to help people with their problems aren't sitting at their keyboard, where we can actually see what's going on. In my own work as a Computer Tech (for way too long) I have to make all sorts of adjustments to a customer's PC, just so I can work with it. Most are things that should have been set, like "Show all Files" at initial setup.

I encourage all my friends and customers to let me set up their new computers for them. That way, I know it will be set up correctly for the easiest operation.

I'm sorry,,,, this simple post is becoming a Rant. But helpers just need to remember that the people they are trying to help can't always see the same things that the helper sees. Eh?

  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System
  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
    • Information
    • Warning
Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

Either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 3 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 03 03 2011
In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 03 03 2011
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
Please post the Output log in your next reply

Depends on the files it is saying are locked.
Files in use cannot be scanned normally.
Hidden system files sometimes will not be scanned.
Chkdsk log will show us if there was any issue with the disk integrity but the Event Viewer will show us exactly what file or App is causing the issue.

It looks to me like you have a nic card problem and that is what is causing the msinstaller issue.

Try this and let us know the results.
Please Go to

1: STARTand the click on RUN
2: Type in devmgmt.msc
3: Click Enter

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop

Two further questions
1.

i did the chkdsk and when my computer restarted it did its thing and now i think its back to factory mode??? i had to reinstall firefox

chkdsk cannot return a computer to its original setup mode ie: factory condition.
Neither can chkdsk require you to reinstall Firefox.
THE ONLY WAY this can happen - requirement to reinstall Firefox is if YOU interrupted chkdsk and that can result in serious file corruption and then ALL manner of applications and programs may not work.
OR if the computer crashed during the chkdsk.

2. You mentioned on your first post finding over 200 errors - what program was it that you ran please.

and it does at this time seem from your device manager screenshot, as though there is NOT at least there an error on the Network adaptor, as we would have expected a yellow or red warning symbol.

Also my apologies re Administrative functions it should have indeed been TOOLS
