edit: No need now. The computer is dead.

I have been experiencing random clicking from my computer.
It happens every time my computer starts up, and again randomly when I open a file.
Each time it does that, my PC freezes for a few secs, then the syslog says something like:

ata1: lost interrupt (Status 0x50)
ata1: soft resetting link
ata1.00: device reported invalid CHS sector 0

Oddly, this only happens when I am running Linux or reading files from the Linux partition.
Maybe this is a HDD failure?
I have backed up everything important. Please show me what to do.

No need for it now...
My HDD is completely dead. The PC won't recognize it any more.
Well... it is 6 yrs old after all.

Well, sorry we were not quick enough. Clicking is often a sign of impending drive failure. I hope you had time to back up any data you need, because unfortunately, recovery now would be near impossible and expensive.

Yes yes... lucky me I had enough time to back up everything.
It's pretty old anyway... Thanks for helping.
