I am working on a Windows XP SP1, Pent 4 2.4 GHz, 256 MB ram, 40 GB HD machine, that was up-to-date on Windows updates as of last week. I have downloaded from a different machine the newest Adaware and installed on this machine, however, I cannot get the latest update to the file. This machine will dial into the ISP normally, however, Internet Explorer will not load any pages (or might load 1 or maybe even 2 before it hoses up). Outlook Express email times out trying to send or receive. Sometimes on a fresh boot, if I hurry, I can get the email to work, but most of the time, it doesn't. Last week, I was working on this machine for the same reason and I ran HJT and ran the analysis from Major Geeks and corrected several problems it found. Three of those problems was a file in 04 called 'Microsoft Update Machine' and the parm was qtmeakf.exe in all 3 places. I removed them according to the analysis and the machine worked perfectly through several shutdowns and restarts and loading pages to be sure it was working correctly, until the user got it home and now that same file (Microsoft Update Machine) is back with something different in the parm area--another .exe. I did a search on the net for these file names and found nothing, but several references to MUM being a virus-worm. Yet all Virus-Worm programs I have loaded Adaware, Spybot, Spysweeper, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard are coming up clean. There is also updated McAfee antivirus. All of these were run just before the HJT log that I post as follows:

I downloaded this and ran it without updating and it didn't find anything. I finally got the 'problem' computer to download the updates and I ran a second scan after updating the software and it found a 'purityscan' trojan and quarantined it. McAfee also came up with an SDBOT gen worm, so I downloaded avert stinger and ran it but it didn't find anything. I rebooted and ran another HJT log--

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ufnkexd.exe

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

I removed the files in HJT as you said to do. The last statement about removing the ufnkexd.exe file from C:\Windows\System32 (if found)--the file was not there, but when I did a search it did find it in C:\windows\prefetch. Also, a search through the registry still shows the file in two places (both Microsoft Update Machine)--however it is NOT showing up in the HJT log.:

After obtaining the above log, I let the pc sit for a couple of hours, I visited a few sites, game sites, a cat site, etc, then left it while I went to lunch. When I came back, I tried to send an email and it would not go, then I got a message that a file was trying to make a change (the cleaner software message) and did I authorize---it was installing another .exe file in Microsoft Update Machine, so I said no, but the same file showed up in the windows\system32 directory. I did another HJT, but the file didn't show up there. Also, somewhere, something I did, removed all of my Windows updates, because I had the RPC shutdown thing happen and when I rebooted, I looked in add/remove programs (because I had updated it completely just last week) and no updates were listed. I went to Windows update and am now downloading 33 updates to Windows--over 20 of them critical.

I checked with the user about all the windows updates, and it was then they reminded me that last week, they had reinstalled xp, thinking it would get rid of their virus/trojan/whatever problem. So the updates reinstall is normal.

Hello, sorry, I haven't gotten back sooner--the pc involved in this issue would not download all the updates, the user finally decided to just wipe the drive and start all over with the restore disks from the manufacturuer. I haven't talked to her today so I don't know what all she did and if it was successful. I was only able to work on this part time and I think she got tired of it taking so long. She thought this should have been a quick fix.

But I want you to know that I do appreciate your help.

This issue is now closed and if she has other problems she needs me to work on (or if what she did over the weekend doesn't work), I'll start a new thread
