Hello again,
I have started cleaning out my basement full stack of desktops I have acquired over the years and have stumbled on yet another problem machine..

Windows Xp OEM is installed on an 80 g hd...When I start it up it goes to the black screen with options of how to boot...apparently there was an issue when I parked it in the basement years ago, anyways any option I choose takes me to the loading screen (win xp logo) and it sticks there...forever.The green process bar is always moving so I assume its not hung up, just trying to load.

I want to put a clean install of win xp back on it but I cant get past the "welcome to winxp" screen.

I popped the drive in a different computer and can access all the files fine.I pulled off pics and docs I wanted to save and tried to format the disc before sticking it in the original computer to load windows on, but it will not format..


I can not get this HD to load into WinXP on one machine and can not format it for a clean install in a different one...what to do?!?!

Put the drive back in the original computer
If you know the make of the HDD download the manufacturers utility from here and format the drive in Dos

or the XP CD in recovery console
or, if the computer has a floppy drive use a Win98 boot disc, yes it will work in XP and format from there.

I have a floppy on the machine with the issues...however i do not have a floppy on this one to make the copy to use

It is a Seagate 340016A ... which one do I need to choose from the tacktech site?

should have mentioned earlier...I have tried starting the machine with the xp cd in the cdrom and it still goes to this screen


with the drive out the machine will boot from the cd
i think i should stop trying to fix things lol

Make it on a CD instead of a floppy.
OR if you want you can run Seagate disc wizard.
It depends on what you want to try.

Have you entered setup and set the Boot priority to CD.
Then asee if it will boot from the CD, enter recovery console and run chkdsk from RC.

OR download above format and start again.

ok I now have cdrom as boot priority

when it boots from disc I have gotten 2 errors

fdc.sys is corrupt

I restarted and got this

file i386 ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded error code 4

When I ran the Seagate disc wizard it loaded and showed a screen that I think was this



but it flashes off so fast I cant really see it...then black screen til i restart

OK good, now what you need to do is:

If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

Then once that is done:

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS

Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

Hopefully you have already put the ISO cd in the drive before all this. If everything is setup correctly you will boot directly to the Diagnostic program and never enter Windows.

That is NOT disk wizard, this is why the issue has become a little confused.
It is Seagate for DOS.
Because you posted as per the quote, it gave the impression that you were running the Disk Wizard.
The Wizard, now I have seen your latest post will do nothing for you,.

As that Seagate is a 40Gb Hard drive and the Seagate for Dos, has not identified it as that capacity - are you with respect, in view of this

Seagate list it as 40 - I think.

ok..im sorry for the confusion..it is on me

the hd is a ST380020A i looked at the wrong hd earlier...frustration is setting in

I am using the SeaTools for DOS not disk wizard

i dld the iso and burnt it to a disc

the pics on the tutorial link is what i see momentarily before the screen goes blank

with the Hdd out the disc loads all files fine..hdd in i get the errors...it is an original copy,but it does have a few scratches on it...it is also a retail copy,not a restore disk if that matters

I am at the page to set up, repair or exit without setting up windows

should i try to repair or go through with the set up?

It appears the volume appears to contain 1 or more unrecoverable problem.

Yes sorry typo error my fault entirely

Should have checked it, more carefully.

It means on the face of it, exactly what it says, the hard drive has unrecoverable errors.
Try a chkdsk C: /p
That does not check for bad sectors.

However I would slave the hard drive to another machine and run the Seatools on it., If it fails the Seatools with bad sectors it is a new hard drive resolution

Dont worry about the typo..I drew first blood with the confusion bullet earlier

I have nearly gave up on this drive.Already installed XP on the 40g I mentioned earlier and its running fine.

I did pop the 80g in as a slave and ran seatools

on the short test I received error code 6E9EDC64

long test is running while I eat

I searched for the error code and turned up nothing

Is it safe to use this drive as a secondary drive or is it trash..if trash is there anyway I can erase the data on the drive before i give up to recycling?

Not exactly the same as your code, but unless you are going to ask Seagate, what the code means, I cannot find it on their list.
