---SOLVED---
Hi everyone. Been around on a few forums for this problem but never recieved any help. This place looks pretty promising.

I'm having a problem with my wifi, and before I go any further I should mention that I am on motel wifi, I have a few other computers here with me though that I am able to compare the results with and rule out that as being a factor. This does not happen on any of the other computers, and does not happen on this computer if I am using Ubuntu instead of Vista.

After about 2 minutes of downloading any file in any browser, the download speed will slowly start to reduce kb by kb until it reaches just bytes per second. For example:

179kb....178kbs...177kbps...176kbps...

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Sorry for the delay, I'm going to ask for some info before I can attempt to help.
Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.

Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages...

Your Everest log and your Autoruns both look good so I don't think either of those is a problem.
Lets try some basic steps to see if it will help.

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Background info courtesy of DonnaB Thank you

As for TFC, this is a tidbit of an article I found a while back by a MicroSoft MVP.

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB).

Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running applications. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.
-- TFC only cleans temp folders.
-- TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged
Please do not run any other Auslogics programs other then this one as they may cause unwanted results.

Done, and done. I love this Auslogics Diskdefrag.

Computer seems a little more snappy, but when I try to download something (Avira Antivirus for example) the download is at 0%, download speed is at 967B/s and descending to 0B/s.

Just because I've seen this before have you tried to move the location of the system you are having a problem with to another part of the house? We have seen dead spots in a home before.

Oh yes, believe me, the looks I got while moving stuff around, holding the USB adapter in the air in different positions, and even making some sort of pie-pan contraption, are priceless.

holding the USB adapter in the air in different positions

I hope you mean moving the laptop from spot to spot.
Trying to connect in different areas could show if it is a signal problem or the system itself.

Oh no, it's a desktop, the USB dongle attaches into this stand, which has a silver USB cord about 3ft long that I plug into the back of the PC. This hunkajunk isn't exactly the most portable thing in the world lol.

Ahh ok that would make it more difficult to move around.
Can you tell me who is the ISP and how many IP's do you have to use?
Have you tried logging another system completely off and running the problem system then?

Our ISP is AT$T, and there are about 12 IPs currently registered right now, only 5 computers are on. And yes, I convinced them to see if it was someone torrenting...etc by allowing just me on the router for a few minutes, didn't resolve the problem sadly. Hmm, I'm wondering if it would just be easier to get a new adapter? Quicker than having to sort this one out.

It is possible the adapter is failing.
Try this and let me know if it helps.
Go to Start then to Run Type in cmd and click Enter
At the new window and prompt type in ipconfig /flushdns and click Enter
When done type in Exit and click Enter. The window will close.
Now reboot and try a download to see what happens.
BTW what are you trying to download if I can ask? I ask because Linux doesn't have a issue with some files where windows may.

Ran that command and rebooted, internet remained the same though. Oh I should have specified what I was downloading, I was at the time trying to download Avira Antivirus (from their site, FileHippo, or Download.com) but decided on Avast! 6 instead, I had to leave that downloading over-night.

Let me know if you can think of anything else, I don't want to waste any of your time if a new adapter would be the best route, heck, I could certainly benefit from one either way. This one is getting old, and was very cheap to begin with. I am extremely grateful for your help though, like I said in my first post, I have been back and forth to different forums and never received any help.
