Hello.

I have a problem trying to install a new program on my pc. When I try to install it I get a message saying:

"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that the Windows Installer
service is properly registered."

I'm running XP SP3. So I installed the latest Windows Installer, still nothing. I tried typing in the Run box: msiexec /unreg then
msiexec /regserver. Nothing. I typed in the Run box CMD, in DOS, msiexec /unregister, msiexec /regserver. Still nothing.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi tombaker and Welcome -

I have a problem trying to install a new program on my pc.

Can you please be a bit more specific as some programs may not be suited to XP -
Is this via internet, CD, or some other method -

Thank You -

Sure, one is an internet program download and the other is an update to Adobe Reader. Neither installs.

Is the program XP compatible?
What program and from where did you download it from?

The program is called Studio Tax. It is XP compatible, as I've used it for years and never had a problem until now. I tried to install the Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 SP2, but that fails, too.

Download Windows Installer CLeanup Utility
This will hopefully cleanup any program that uses windows installer to setup.

Hmmm, looks like the the tool has been removed from the Microsoft Download Center. Is there another tool?

Thanks, but my installation failed:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe
mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance"

Ok lets check to see if the failed install is on your system.
What I would suggest is Uninstalling All Programs you don't need or don't want anymore through Add/Remove Programs

Do this by going to

Start and then to Control Panel
Click Add/Remove Programs
Carefully choose the program(s) you don't need...in your case the failed net.framework install
Click on each Program then click Change/Remove and Follow the Uninstall Instructions

You may be prompted to Restart your computer.
Restart once you have all the programs you don't need uninstalled.
Be careful not to remove anything needed by your computer, some of which you may be unfamiliar with the name,

OK now try to install the new one and see if it works.
Better yet try going through Windows update and see if it will install there.
