Wont BOOt showing Black Screen

My dell computer wont boot. It is showing a black screen with an underscore in the upper left hand corner. I have tried the avg cd and nothing works. My computers frezes when i come to the agreement page. Please help. I dont want to default to factory setting because i have all my work files inside. Please help me fix my computer.
