Thanks, so much.
Completely forgot about that.

Saw in the user manual two ram slots.

OK at 5 passes I would say if it doesn't find anything then it should be fine to stop the test.

Ok then the issue is not the memory. Now we need to find out if the HD is being recognized in the bios.
Can you boot into the BIOS like you did to change the boot sequence but this time I need to see if the HD is being identified in the installed drives area. Depending on the bios it will be on the first page or you may have to go to the area that says Automatically Detect Hard drives or something like that. Let us know what it says.

Go to the Advance Area and then scroll down and enter the IDE Configuration.
You should see all Hard Drives and cdrom drives connected to your motherboard.
Please let us know if it identifies your hd. Normally it will show the hd by ID number

WDxxxxxx for Western Digital
Sxxxxxxx for Seagate and or Maxtor
Fxxxxxxx for Fujitsu

Something like the above.

I was hopeing that it was RAM causing the issue because RAM cost less than a hard drive.
The issue may be that Acer has the drivers for your hard drive on their recovery disk, but XP does not have the driver.
It can also be that your hard drive has failed.
That is why we want to see if the BIOS list your hard drive.

Do you have a entry from the main menu that says something like Auto Detect Hard Drive or something like that?

Have a look at the first page of the BIOS setup screens. on the heading Information.

Does it say Phoenix Trusted Setup Utility on the top bar
On the main window, after the CPU details what is listed under the entries IDE

It will I think my research tell me say , if it is 80Gb HGST and then HTS54
It may posibly say Seagate
