A big THANK YOU to all that may be responding to this post! :D

Events:

  • Wife complained PC + Firefox would not run Yahoo games
  • I forced AdAware to get latest update, then ran a scan
  • AdAware reported "High level security threat detected and removed", listed these 3:
    • Email-Worm.Win32.Doombot.b (worm)
    • Packed.Wind32.Tdss.Gen (v) (malware)
    • Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT (malware)
  • I was upset that AVG didn't detect anything, so I de-installed it and installed most recent Avast! and ran a full scan.
  • Avast reported a rootkit installed, I told it to delete it.
  • Avast suggested reboot with resulting boot-time scan
  • Avast boot-time scan reported finding Alureon-FZ in an Avast directory (maybe a red herring?)
  • Avast boot-time scan reported nothing else nasty
  • When WinXP fully came up, a "missing DLL" error popup window occurred (uyikesuha.dll) - no surprise
  • When I ran Firefox to do some Google searching, I found it "hijacked" and directing me to bogus sites
  • I tried to install Wireshark so I could possible see what the PC was trying to talk to on the net
  • Wireshark would not run because WinPcap didn't install correctly
  • Additional reboot of system yeilds Avast! (again) finding a rootkit installed
  • At one point, Avast! came up DISABLED and clicking the start button within it did nothing to get it running
  • Did Google searching via another PC and found this forum; download and run OTL
After I get this mess cleaned up I intend to do some major fortification of WinXP, using guidelines from this site. :D

  • I did the OTL - Fix step, but screwed it up by launching OTL from a CD that I made (to put virus fixing tools onto the PC; I had it disconnected from the network. When it tried to create temp files it FAILED, so I re-ran the OTL-fix this time from hard drive folder. The resulting log is attached.
  • aswMBR log is below; it complains about a rootkit after each reboot.
  • MBAM found items; I had it SCRUB them - log is below.
  • Additional MBAM run shows no problems - log is below.
Any suggestions on how to get rid of the pesky rootkit that aswMBR (and regular Avast) is finding?

Thanks,

Goony

OK, I think I've got things under control now (as far as the rootkit goes).

I downloaded a copy of TDSSkiller and ran it. It found the rootkit and removed it; after a reboot the TDSSkiller and the aswMBR now run clean.

Here is the relevant portion of the TDSSkiller log:

I am glad you did not use aswMBR to fix it, as at the moment it only detects and reports TDL3

TDSSKiller would have been the next step

Could you now run OTL again, select all users and then run the scan. Also what are your current problems
