I have one last question before departing, we talked earlier about not being able to log into the router. I was informed today that just pressing the router reset button is not sufficient but that I must hold it down for about 20 seconds which will then reset the router back to defaults. This would allow me to reconnect to it (setting up password and so forth). Is this correct?

Yes, that will set it back to factory condition , the time can vary - 30seconds , you should see all the lights go out and then go through the reset .
BUT _ not only will this set the password back to default it will also set everything else on the router back to default - so you will then need to reconfigure any other settings needed to work with the cable modem

would you just look at the netgear model again - as its an ADSL modem and that would mean it willl not work with a cable modem , unless the cable modem is a router and connected to one of the LAN sockets on the router - and the router would need to be set up to support that

Apologies but I didn't understand the part about the netgear model, do you need the information again for it? No disconnections, internet is stable now and fast. Would you recommend I leave it alone for now since its working?

I looked up the N300 and was getting results for a ADSL Modem/Router - which did not make sense as you had a modem already

But searched again to day and found http://www.netgear.c...y/WNR3500L.aspx

which at least needs a modem to work

so that was the confusion .....

Is that link the router you have ?

Whenever you want , no rush as its all working , if you search for N300 - there are quite a few models some with ADSL modems

was this when you touched the modem ?

you seem to have lost connection to the modem but can ping to the internet - not making sense , the connection must have come back whilst doing the tests
