Yesterday I was paralyzed with the Win 7 Total Security 2011 virus. I never downloaded it as I knew it was a scam, but I didn't know how to get rid of it. I sent a frustrated note to ESET about why they couldn't catch this and this morning the ESET scan found the infections and eliminated, apparently (the security warnings no longer pop up). However, now I cannot seem to run any programs on my computer (I finally got Firefox started in safe mode).

If I click on the Firefox or IE or Chrome shortcuts, a screen pops up saying "choose the program you want to open this file" If I browse and find the program and click on it it IE opens briefly then closes and a "file download security warning" box opens with iexplore.exe (From: C:\program files(X86)\internet explorer) and asks to save or run and click run. If I click run, it tries and then circles back box asking if I want to run or save iexplore.exe.

With other programs, I can't even get this far. If I click on MS Word, a box pops up and provides a file name (C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE and says "Application Not Found" - similar with other Office programs, including OUTLOOK.EXE

Other software has this problems too.

I even tried to do a system restore to a few days ago and that even brought up the box that asked "Choose the program you want to use to open this file."

I am lost as to what to do. It's certainly paralyzing my ability to do any work.

Thank you for any help in deciphering and fixing this problem.

Maybe I should add, that although I cannot start Word or Excel, I can open and view existing Word or Excel files.

Also, I can't run system restore and cant seem to reboot in safe mode (F8) didn't work.
I tried running msconfig and get the same message asking me to choose a program to run that file.

HELP PLEASE!
